Moroccan Authorities Clarify Status of British Tourist Amid Controversy

Clarification from Moroccan National Security

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has categorically refuted rumors regarding the arrest and detention of a 20-year-old British tourist in Marrakech, labeling these assertions as entirely "false and unfounded." This statement was made public by the DGSN on Tuesday, aiming to clarify the circumstances surrounding the individual involved.

According to the DGSN, the tourist was not taken into police custody, but was instead subjected to a judicial inquiry for filming and disseminating images of individuals, particularly minors, without their explicit consent, which contravenes Moroccan law. This investigation was initiated following complaints from local citizens who observed the man recording videos in Jemaa el-Fna square, where he was seen capturing footage of people in vulnerable positions, predominantly minors, under the guise of distributing aid.

Upon receiving directives from the public prosecutor, the police launched a thorough investigation, which included seizing the individual's phone for forensic examination to scrutinize its digital content. The DGSN reassured the public that the individual benefitted from all legal protections throughout the process and was subsequently referred to court while remaining at liberty, with a hearing scheduled in accordance with national legal procedures.

This clarification comes in response to claims made by the Daily Mail, which cited the man's mother as alleging his detention for several hours and the restriction of his communication with family members after he filmed himself distributing supplies to children living on the streets. The DGSN's statement serves to ensure transparency and uphold the integrity of the legal process in Morocco.
