Moroccan Authorities Combat Wildfire Amid Rising Temperatures

On July 11, 2026, Moroccan authorities are actively engaged in efforts to control a wildfire that broke out on July 10 in the oases of the Errachidia region located in the southeast of the country. This incident coincides with a noticeable rise in temperatures across several areas. A local official, who requested anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media, informed Anadolu Agency that firefighting teams are diligently working to extinguish the blaze that erupted in the Afous oases of Errachidia.

The official reported that while the fire has not resulted in any human casualties, it has devastated a significant area of palm trees, although the exact extent of the damage has yet to be determined. On July 5, the Moroccan authorities had already urged residents in the vicinity of forests across 12 provinces to exercise caution until July 12, as warnings of potential wildfires were issued.

The National Agency for Water and Forests released a statement indicating that the highest level of fire risk, classified as red, encompasses forests in 12 out of 75 provinces in the country. Morocco employs an early warning system managed by the National Agency for Water and Forests to assess the risks associated with wildfires, which issues regular updates based on climatic conditions and the state of vegetation.

The red alert level signifies an extreme risk of fire outbreaks, while an orange level indicates a high risk, necessitating enhanced precautionary measures and avoidance of activities that could ignite flames. In 2025, wildfires consumed approximately 1,728 hectares of forest in the kingdom, with secondary grasses and seasonal plants accounting for about 45 percent of the total affected area. The warnings regarding wildfires are further compounded by an alert issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology concerning a heatwave, during which temperatures are expected to reach as high as 46 degrees Celsius in certain regions of the country.
