Condemnation of Maritime Assault on Humanitarian Efforts
The Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Opposing Normalization has strongly condemned what it characterizes as a blatant act of «maritime assault and piracy» perpetrated by the Israeli occupation forces against the humanitarian Sumud Flotilla, which was navigating in international waters on May 18, 2026. This interception is seen as a significant violation of international humanitarian law and conventions designed to protect the freedom of navigation on the high seas.
According to a statement released by the Front, naval forces affiliated with the Israeli military engaged unarmed civilian vessels that were part of an international humanitarian convoy. This convoy was working to breach the blockade on the Gaza Strip and deliver much-needed humanitarian aid. The operation resulted in the abduction of several activists, including seven Moroccan nationals, raising serious concerns about the safety and rights of those involved.
Call for International Action and Solidarity
The Front expressed that the targeting of a civilian flotilla on the high seas represents a severe breach of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law. It accused the Israeli government of pursuing a systematic policy aimed at obstructing humanitarian assistance from reaching the residents of Gaza, who are enduring what the Front deems an «unjust» and «illegal» blockade. Furthermore, the statement criticized the international community for its lack of action, urging the United Nations and its associated bodies to take immediate measures to address what it described as ongoing violations and to challenge the prevailing silence regarding incidents in the Palestinian territories.
In light of these events, the Front reaffirmed that the humanitarian convoy was a peaceful initiative aimed at showing solidarity with the Palestinian people. The interception of this convoy is considered a «crime of maritime piracy» that warrants global condemnation. The group emphasized that such aggressive actions would not deter the commitment of solidarity activists nor halt ongoing efforts to lift the blockade on Gaza. In concluding its statement, the Front called upon the nations whose citizens were involved, particularly Morocco, to urgently intervene and advocate for the safety of those detained, demanding their immediate and unconditional release. It also reiterated the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to receive humanitarian assistance and to break free from the imposed blockade.
