In a recent interview, Mustapha El Khalfi, the former spokesperson for the Moroccan government, has drawn a direct connection between the mass assault on Ceuta and proposed legislation in the Spanish Congress aimed at granting Spanish nationality to Sahrawis born before 1977. This legislative initiative, which is backed by the political coalition Sumar, has caused unease within the regime of King Mohammed VI, as it could potentially grant Spanish citizenship to a significant number of Sahrawis, estimated between 8,000 and 200,000 by El Khalfi. Mustapha El Khalfi previously served as the Minister of Communication and spokesperson for Morocco from 2012 to 2019, representing the Justice and Development Party (PJD), which adheres to a model of moderate Islamism. Following a substantial electoral defeat in 2021, this party has since transitioned to the opposition.
