Moroccan Journalists' Union Condemns Article Demanding Eid Sacrifices for 'Correspondents'

The regional representative of the National Union of Moroccan Journalists in the Marrakech-Safi region, Moulay Abd Al-Wahid Talbi, has strongly condemned an article published on a news website that calls on local authorities to provide "Eid sacrifices" to certain "correspondents." Talbi criticized this demand as a grave and unacceptable insult to the professional status and social standing of journalists, describing the content of the publication as "begging and solicitation" that undermines the dignity of the profession and its ethical principles.

Furthermore, the union leader emphasized that the National Union of Moroccan Journalists, being the most representative body in the sector, distances itself from such reckless behaviors exhibited by a group that exploits the profession for personal gain and impersonates journalists. He clarified that journalism is a regulated profession governed by clear laws, with its foundational bodies dedicated to safeguarding the fundamental rights of all its members, asserting that among professionals, there are none who "cannot afford their daily bread or stand at the door of charity as beggars."

Talbi also urged the governor of the Marrakech-Safi region, Khalid Lahbil, to enforce the law and conduct strict verifications of anyone approaching the local authorities claiming to represent journalists without official status or representation. Additionally, he called on the administration to cease any distribution of public funds under the pretext of assisting "unpaid correspondents," announcing that the union reserves its full right to pursue legal action against anyone involved in defaming the media sector or promoting a distorted image that tarnishes the reputation of its professionals.
