Moroccan Nationals Lead Record Surge in Spanish Citizenship Grants in 2025

Moroccans at the Forefront of Spanish Naturalizations

In a significant development underscoring the growing integration of foreign communities in Spain, Moroccans emerged as the leading nationality among foreign nationals granted Spanish citizenship in 2025. The recent data released by Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) reveals that the country witnessed its highest annual number of naturalizations in over a decade, with a staggering total of 299,732 foreign residents acquiring Spanish nationality. This figure represents an impressive 18.7% increase compared to the previous year, 2024, marking the highest number of naturalizations since the INE began tracking these statistics in 2013.

Among the newly naturalized citizens, Moroccan nationals topped the list, with 42,114 individuals successfully obtaining Spanish citizenship. They were followed by Colombian nationals, who numbered 37,712, and Venezuelans with 36,271 new citizens. Hondurans also made their mark with 20,745 individuals becoming Spanish citizens. These statistics not only highlight the significant presence of the Moroccan community in Spain but also reflect the broader trends of demographic and social changes within the country, as Moroccans continue to represent the largest group of foreign-born residents in Spain. As of January 1, 2025, census data indicated that over 1.16 million individuals born in Morocco were residing in Spain.

Demographic Insights and Naturalization Processes

Delving deeper into the demographics of new Spanish citizens, the data disclosed that women constituted the majority of those granted citizenship, accounting for 55.4% of all naturalizations. In contrast, men made up 44.6%. Age-wise, the most represented group among new citizens were adults aged between 30 and 39, closely followed by those aged 40 to 49. The naturalization process was predominantly facilitated through legal residency, which accounted for a remarkable 253,836 cases. Additionally, 45,715 individuals acquired nationality via “option” procedures, typically utilized by those with Spanish parents or individuals who had previously been under the guardianship of Spanish citizens.

Furthermore, the INE data revealed that a significant majority, about 83.3%, of those who obtained Spanish nationality last year had lived abroad before settling in Spain, while 16.7% had always resided within the country. This trend illustrates Spain's evolving demographic landscape, with foreign-born residents now making up nearly one in every five inhabitants in a country whose overall population exceeds 49 million. As Spain continues to embrace migration, these statistics reflect a broader commitment to diversity and integration within its society.
