Moroccan Officers Berrid and Bensdira Honored with US Legion of Merit

Moroccan Military Leadership Receives High Honors from the United States

In a significant display of military diplomacy, Lieutenant General Mohammed Berrid, acting under the auspices of King Mohammed VI, the Supreme Commander and Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, engaged in discussions with US Army General Dagvin Anderson on Thursday. This meeting, which took place at the Southern Zone headquarters, coincided with General Anderson’s visit to Morocco for the prestigious African Lion exercise, an annual military event that highlights the robust partnership between Morocco and the United States.

The dialogue between the two military leaders was centered on enhancing bilateral military cooperation, particularly in the realms of operational training and joint exercises. Both parties acknowledged the strategic significance of the African Lion exercise, which has been collaboratively organized since 2004 and serves as a cornerstone of the enduring defense relationship between Rabat and Washington. This year marks the 22nd iteration of the African Lion drills, which showcase the commitment of both nations to collaborative defense initiatives.

During this pivotal meeting, the evolving framework of cooperation between the US and Moroccan armed forces was underscored, emphasizing training, coordination, and interoperability. In recognition of their exemplary contributions to fortifying military ties, Lieutenant General Berrid and Brigadier General Mohsine Bensdira, who leads the 3rd Bureau of the Southern Zone Staff, were awarded the prestigious United States Legion of Merit. This honor was conferred during an official ceremony presided over by General Dagvin Anderson, representing the U.S. Secretary of War, as detailed in a statement from the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces.

The African Lion 26 exercise, which commenced on April 20, spans across four nations—Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal—and involves the participation of over 7,000 military personnel from more than 30 countries. Morocco plays host to the majority of the drills, reinforcing its role as a key player in regional security and military collaboration. This annual exercise, recognized as the largest joint military endeavor led by AFRICOM on the African continent, is set to conclude on Friday, further solidifying the strategic alliance between the United States and Morocco.
