Massive Demonstration in Marrakech Against Normalization with Israel
On Wednesday, hundreds of Moroccans gathered in Marrakech, located in the northern part of the country, to express their support for Palestine and to firmly reject any normalization of relations with Israel. This significant protest was organized by the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Opposing Normalization, a non-governmental organization dedicated to advocating for Palestinian rights and denouncing agreements that facilitate relations with Israel.
During the demonstration, participants chanted slogans that condemned what they perceived as provocative actions and normalization efforts. Activists on social media recently circulated images of Haredi Jews performing religious rituals near the historic Bab Doukkala wall in Marrakech, which went unaddressed by the authorities, further fueling the discontent among the demonstrators.
The protesters raised banners and chanted messages such as "O Zionist, O coward, the prisoner shall not be humiliated" and "The people want the downfall of normalization," clearly voicing their opposition to the establishment of ties with Israel. Among the placards displayed were calls to cease normalization with Israel, with slogans like "No to the settlement of Zionists in our country" resonating strongly throughout the crowd.
In December 2020, Morocco and Israel resumed diplomatic relations through American mediation. This decision faced significant backlash from various segments of the Moroccan populace and political forces, culminating in visits by high-ranking Israeli officials to Rabat. However, these interactions were halted following the onset of the recent genocide in Gaza, which began on October 8, 2023. This brutal conflict, supported by the United States, has resulted in over 72,000 Palestinian deaths and more than 172,000 injuries, predominantly affecting children and women, alongside the destruction of 90% of the civil infrastructure.
