Significant Achievements for Moroccan Higher Education
Moroccan higher education continues to gain recognition on the global stage, as evidenced by the recent 2026 Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), released on August 16. This year, two esteemed institutions from Morocco, Hassan II University of Casablanca and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), have successfully secured positions among the world's top 1,000 universities, specifically within the 901–1000 range. This simultaneous presence marks a historic achievement, illustrating Morocco's steady progression in meeting international standards for scientific research.
Hassan II University of Casablanca has maintained its position in the global Top 1000 for the third consecutive year, affirming its presence since 2024. Meanwhile, UM6P has made a significant leap by entering the overall ARWU ranking for the first time, having previously only appeared in thematic rankings by discipline. Nationally, the two universities share the top spot equally, in accordance with ARWU presentation rules that list institutions alphabetically when they fall within the same score range.
An analysis of academic indicators reveals a noteworthy similarity between the two institutions. Both universities have identical scores related to highly cited researchers (HiCi), while UM6P slightly surpasses Hassan II University in publications in prestigious journals such as Nature and Science, as well as in the volume of indexed articles. Their per capita performance (PCP) also remains comparable. However, neither institution received points for indicators related to Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals, a criterion traditionally dominated by long-established universities.
Beyond the overall ranking, UM6P continues to excel in various thematic areas. The university ranks in the global Top 76–100 for mining and mineral engineering, and in the 401–500 range for electrical engineering, electronics, and agricultural sciences. These accomplishments affirm the institution's strategic focus on scientific specialization, geared towards applied research and innovation.
Global Academic Landscape: U.S. Dominance and China's Rise
On a global scale, the Shanghai Ranking remains dominated by American institutions. Harvard University retains its top position, followed closely by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The top ten is rounded out by renowned universities including Cambridge, UC Berkeley, Princeton, Oxford, Columbia, Caltech, and the University of Chicago. While the United States continues to lead within the Top 100, China is rapidly ascending, boasting over 220 universities in the Top 1000, highlighting the burgeoning strength of Asian research.
