Moroccan Warships Enter Ceuta Waters During Migrant Influx
In a significant development, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has confirmed that Moroccan warships unlawfully entered the waters of Ceuta on July 30 and 31, coinciding with a massive influx of immigrants into this autonomous city. During an informal discussion with journalists at a National Day reception, Sánchez acknowledged the gravity of the situation, which was further highlighted by a report from the newspaper El País detailing the incursions of the Moroccan Navy into waters under Spanish sovereignty. This period was marked by intense challenges, according to Sánchez, who noted that there were high-level communications between the military forces of both nations. However, the Prime Minister refrained from elaborating on the reasons behind these maritime entries.
Military Mobilization and Rising Tensions
Reports indicate that the Moroccan vessels operated without authorization in Spanish territorial waters near Ceuta during a critical time when numerous individuals were crossing from Morocco. This prompted the Spanish government to mobilize a maritime action vessel, which docked in Ceuta on August 3. Subsequently, the Ministry of Defense bolstered naval presence in the region with the deployment of the frigate Santa María, which was later replaced by the Navarra due to technical issues with the former. Sources cited by El País described the Moroccan maneuvers as a deliberate violation, suggesting that tensions escalated in Spanish waters, with Moroccan warships nearly causing a collision with Spanish patrol vessels.
In response to this situation, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the Mayor of Madrid, expressed skepticism regarding the Moroccan authorities' claims of ignorance about these events. He questioned whether anyone could doubt the complicity of Moroccan authorities in both the immigrant situation and the movement of military vessels. Almeida asserted that the presence of warships posed an even more serious threat than the influx of immigrants, indicating that both issues are interconnected. He also expressed hope that a future change in government would shed light on what information Morocco possesses concerning Sánchez’s administration, emphasizing the importance of transparency regarding these diplomatic and security issues.
