Significant Emigration Trends in Spain

Marrakech – Recent provisional data from Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) reveals that Moroccans constituted the second-largest demographic of individuals leaving Spain during the second quarter of 2026. In total, approximately 10,900 Moroccans emigrated from Spain between April and June, just behind Colombians, whose departures reached 11,500. This pattern highlights a notable trend in migration as individuals seek new opportunities abroad.

Conversely, Morocco has emerged as a prominent source of immigration to Spain, with around 21,100 Moroccans making the move to the Iberian Peninsula during the same time frame. This positions Morocco third among countries contributing to Spain's immigration, following Colombia, which saw 34,000 new arrivals, and Venezuela, with 23,300. Such migration flows underscore the dynamic nature of cross-border movements between these nations.

Population Dynamics and Citizenship Trends

The reported migration patterns are part of a broader demographic analysis indicating that Spain's population reached a historic high of 49,801,559 residents by July 1, marking an increase of 104,178 individuals within the quarter. Over the past year, the population has grown by 444,205, although this annual growth rate has moderated to 0.9%. Importantly, this population increase is primarily attributed to individuals born outside of Spain, with the foreign-born resident count climbing by more than 118,000 while the native-born population experienced a decline of roughly 14,000.

Currently, Spain is home to 10,291,807 foreign-born residents, constituting approximately 20.66% of the total population. The distinction between foreign-born residents and foreign nationals reveals an ongoing trend in citizenship acquisition, with foreign nationals rising by 87,197 to a total of 7,437,543. Notably, the number of individuals holding Spanish nationality increased by 16,981, surpassing 42.36 million, of which 3,370,854 individuals born abroad have successfully obtained Spanish citizenship.

Beyond the leading nationalities, other notable sources of immigration to Spain include Peru, with 16,800 arrivals, Brazil at 8,300, Italy with 7,600, and others. On the flip side, the countries following Colombia and Morocco in terms of emigration include Venezuela, Peru, Romania, and Spain itself.

Every region of Spain witnessed a population increase during the quarter, with the most significant relative growth observed in the Comunitat Valenciana, Balearic Islands, Asturias, and Murcia. In terms of household statistics, Spain reported 19,874,860 households at the beginning of July, reflecting an increase of 58,794 from the previous three months and a year-on-year rise of 1.22%. The country has seen the addition of nearly 772,000 households since January 2023.

It is important to note that the INE has stated these migration figures are preliminary estimates, with final numbers expected to be released in a comprehensive annual report detailing migration and changes in residence.
