Moroccans Among Top Recipients of EU Residence Permits
Recent statistics from the European Union's statistical office, Eurostat, reveal that Moroccan citizens ranked third among non-EU nationals in acquiring first residence permits in the bloc during 2025. This notable achievement places Moroccans behind only Ukrainian and Indian nationals, who received 335,100 and 227,600 permits, respectively. The data, released on September 11, shows that EU member states issued approximately 202,000 first residence permits to Moroccans, accounting for about 5.2% of all permits granted to non-EU nationals, which totaled 3.9 million, reflecting a 10.1% increase from the previous year. This surge translates to an increase of roughly 355,000 permits issued compared to 2024.
Employment emerged as the predominant motivation for these permits, making up 33.6% of the total permits issued, with nearly 1.3 million permits attributed to job-related reasons. Family reunification was the second most common reason, accounting for 28.1% of the permits, while other factors such as international protection and educational pursuits contributed 22.8% and 15.5%, respectively. This data underscores the growing significance of Moroccan nationals in the context of migration policies within the EU, as they continue to seek opportunities for residence and employment across Europe.
