Morocco Accelerates Electric Vehicle Adoption with European Support and Industrial Investments

Morocco's Strategic Shift Towards Electric Vehicles

In recent years, Morocco has witnessed a significant transformation in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, propelled by stringent European industrial policies. These developments are positioning the nation as a regional hub within the value chains associated with the electric vehicle industry. According to projections from BMI-Fitch Solutions, this growth is largely in response to European regulatory changes, particularly concerning local content requirements and market access conditions. As a result, local competitiveness and manufacturing capabilities are becoming critical factors in the evolving landscape of the automotive market.

Data indicates a robust upward trend in EV sales, with expectations that passenger electric vehicle sales will increase by an impressive 80.4% in 2025, reaching 5,311 units. This growth trajectory is set to continue, with a further 36.3% increase predicted for 2026, bringing sales to 7,237 units. Furthermore, the penetration rate of electric vehicles is forecasted to rise from 1.9% in 2024 to 2.6% in 2025, and then to 3.4% in 2026. This marks a gradual shift in the local market structure, as electric vehicles transition from a niche category to a promising sector.

Production Growth and Local Innovations

The year 2024 marked a notable surge in the market, as sales of fully electric vehicles soared by 143% to 1,125 units, while sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles experienced a staggering 224% increase, totaling 1,819 units. This surge has elevated the overall market share of electric vehicles to 1.9%, up from 0.7% in 2023. Currently, Morocco's production volume for electric vehicles ranges between 40,000 and 50,000 units annually, which includes models such as the Fiat Topolino, Opel Rocks, and Citroën Ami. This trend indicates a commitment to integrating into global production chains.

In addition, the announcement by Neo Motors regarding the launch of the first locally designed and assembled electric vehicle, named "Dial-E," expected to enter industrial production in early 2026, reflects the advancement of national industrial capabilities. This momentum signifies that Morocco is not merely keeping pace with the global shift towards electric vehicles but is also striving to solidify its position as a key industrial and export center in this vital sector.
