Morocco Achieves 46% of Electricity Needs from Renewable Energy Sources

Morocco's Renewable Energy Progress

In a significant announcement before the Moroccan parliament, Energy Minister Leila Benali revealed that the nation is now generating 46% of its electricity requirements through renewable energy sources. This achievement marks a remarkable increase from 37% just four years ago, showcasing Morocco's commitment to sustainable energy development. The minister made this declaration during her address to the Council of Advisors in Rabat, emphasizing the country's leading role among emerging nations in the renewable energy sector.

Investment and Future Outlook

Benali highlighted that investments in renewable energy have surged to approximately $15 billion over the past four years, a testament to Morocco's strategic focus on transitioning its energy portfolio. The ministry has granted licenses for 66 renewable energy projects valued at 55 billion dirhams (around $5.5 billion), a stark contrast to the mere 23 licenses issued between 2011 and 2021. This dramatic increase, with the rate of investment licensing in renewable energy projects now eight times higher than prior to 2021, reflects a growing confidence from both national and international investors. The Moroccan government has simplified regulatory processes and showcased the country's abundant renewable energy resources, further attracting investment.

In light of global market fluctuations exacerbated by events such as the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and rising tensions in the Middle East, Morocco is striving to enhance its energy security and reduce its dependence on imports, which currently account for about 90% of its energy needs. The country's ongoing expansion of investments in renewable energy and green hydrogen projects is integral to its energy transition strategy, reinforcing Morocco's position as a key player in the global renewable energy landscape.
