Morocco Achieves Historic 7th Place in FIFA Rankings for the First Time

Morocco's Historic Rise in FIFA Rankings

On June 12, 2026, the Moroccan national football team made headlines by ascending to the remarkable rank of seventh in the FIFA World Rankings, marking an unprecedented achievement in the nation's football history. This advancement, which reflects a one-place increase, was confirmed in the monthly rankings released by FIFA on Thursday. The team’s impressive performance, which included a victory over Madagascar and a friendly draw with Norway, contributed to their accumulation of 1755.10 points.

According to a statement from FIFA, Morocco continues its notable rise, achieving its highest ranking since the introduction of the men's global rankings in 1993. This milestone has seen Morocco surpass the Netherlands, which has now dropped to eighth place. As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Morocco's position as the seventh-best team globally places them just behind Brazil, currently in sixth place with 1765.86 points following their victory over Egypt.

Current Standings and Implications for the World Cup

At the top of the rankings, Argentina, the reigning World Cup champion, has claimed the first spot after moving up two places, thanks to wins against Iceland and Honduras. France, despite a win over Northern Ireland, has fallen to third after a defeat to Ivory Coast. Spain remains in second place, bolstered by a draw against Iraq and a win over Peru, while England and Portugal hold the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

In the top 20 teams, Mexico has improved to 14th, and Uruguay has climbed to 16th, surpassing Senegal, which has dropped to 15th, and the United States, now in 17th. Iran has made its entry into the top 20, securing the 20th position.

On the African continent, Morocco maintains its lead in the rankings, comfortably ahead of Senegal at 15th, followed by Nigeria at 26th, Algeria at 28th, and Egypt at 29th. FIFA further clarified that the world rankings will serve as a critical determinant for final standings among teams that are tied on points within their groups after the group stage, as well as for identifying the best eight teams that finish third to qualify for the knockout stage, should ties persist after applying the initial two criteria.
