Morocco's Impressive Advancement in Global Peace Index
In a significant milestone for the nation, Morocco has ascended 20 positions in the 2026 Global Peace Index, now securing the 65th slot out of 163 countries and territories worldwide. This new ranking not only marks a notable improvement from its previous position but also establishes Morocco as the leading country in the Maghreb region, while placing it seventh across the African continent and fourth within the Arab world.
The Global Peace Index, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), evaluates nations based on a comprehensive set of 23 indicators. These indicators assess various aspects including safety and security, internal and external conflict levels, and degrees of militarization. The index aims to encapsulate the peace levels affecting 99.7 percent of the global population, making it one of the most thorough studies available on global peace trends.
With a score of 1.895 points—where lower scores signify higher peace levels—Morocco has been classified within the “high” level of peacefulness category. This classification is part of a five-tier system that ranges from very high to very low levels of peace. The latest ranking reflects a substantial improvement for the nation, which was previously positioned at 85th in the prior edition of the index.
Regional Leadership and Global Context
In terms of regional dynamics, Morocco stands out ahead of several neighboring countries, continuing to lead the Maghreb in peace and stability. Within Africa, the nation ranks seventh, with Mauritius leading the continent at an impressive 18th position globally. Other notable African nations include Equatorial Guinea, Botswana, Gambia, Madagascar, and Namibia, which follow closely behind.
In the Arab world, Qatar has topped the rankings at 31st globally, with Kuwait and Oman following suit. Morocco’s ranking places it fourth among Arab countries, just behind Jordan. Within the Maghreb context, Tunisia ranks second behind Morocco at 77th, while Algeria, Mauritania, and Libya follow in 91st, 112th, and 125th places, respectively.
On a global scale, Iceland has maintained its status as the world’s most peaceful country since 2008. New Zealand, Switzerland, and Slovenia round out the top four. Conversely, nations like Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Russia continue to struggle with low peace levels.
Despite Morocco's positive trajectory in the Global Peace Index, the overall report highlights a troubling trend for the world at large, noting a 0.7 percent decline in average peace levels over the past year. This marks the 12th consecutive year of deteriorating peace. The report indicates that 99 countries have experienced a decline in peace, while only 62 have shown improvements. Furthermore, it points out that 119 nations are now less peaceful than they were in 2008, with armed conflicts and geopolitical tensions being the primary factors driving this decline.
Nevertheless, Morocco’s enhanced ranking underscores the nation’s relative stability amid a tumultuous global landscape, reinforcing its position as the most peaceful country in the Maghreb.
