Morocco Aims to Strengthen Trade Partnerships with Indonesia and ASEAN

Morocco's Strategic Trade Initiatives in Southeast Asia

In an effort to enhance its economic ties with Southeast Asia, Morocco is actively pursuing stronger trade partnerships with Indonesia and the ASEAN bloc. During an official visit to Jakarta, Omar Hejira, the Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, engaged in a series of meetings aimed at boosting commercial exchanges and investments between Morocco and Indonesia. Accompanied by the Moroccan ambassador to Indonesia, Redouane Houssaini, and a delegation of Moroccan business leaders, Hejira's discussions with Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry officials focused on fostering bilateral investments, intensifying economic missions, and exploring new opportunities in various sectors such as agro-industry, fertilizers, energy, renewable energies, logistics, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.

He highlighted Morocco's strategic advantages as a gateway to both African and European markets, urging Indonesian companies to embark on joint investment initiatives that target regional growth. Furthermore, the Moroccan delegation met with the Indonesian Agency for Halal Product Assurance to accelerate the implementation of a mutual recognition agreement for halal certifications. A visit from the agency's officials to Morocco is scheduled for September, aiming to deepen cooperation with local private sector stakeholders and the Moroccan Institute for Standardization (IMANOR).

Strengthening Economic Ties with ASEAN

In addition to these initiatives, Hejira also held discussions with Satvinder Singh, the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN, regarding the enhancement of economic partnerships between Morocco and the regional organization. Both parties agreed to organize a business forum that would bring together Moroccan enterprises and those from ASEAN member states. Notably, Morocco has received an official invitation to participate in the ASEAN Investment Summit, which is set to take place in the Philippines in November 2026.

These strategic meetings are part of Morocco's External Trade Program for 2025-2027, which aims to diversify the Kingdom's export markets and solidify its economic presence in Southeast Asia.
