Morocco and AFRICOM Join Forces to Establish AMTEC Military Training Center

Strategic Collaboration Between Morocco and AFRICOM

On July 13, Morocco's Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) entered into a significant partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing the Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) in the city of Tan-Tan. This ambitious project is set to evolve by 2030 into a comprehensive facility that will not only feature a multidomain training area but also incorporate a drone academy and an innovation center dedicated to experimentation. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in military collaboration between Morocco and the U.S., emphasizing the importance of innovative approaches to defense and resilience in the face of emerging challenges.

General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the FAR and Commander of the Southern Zone, articulated the advantages of Morocco’s robust infrastructure and skilled workforce, asserting that these elements will facilitate a swift transition from theoretical concepts to operational readiness. He emphasized the potential for Moroccan and American industries to form a reliable partnership that fosters collaborative innovation and export opportunities. This sentiment was echoed by General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, who noted that this partnership presents an exceptional opportunity for both U.S. and African defense sectors, as well as academic institutions, to engage in experimentation, innovation, and the development of scalable technological solutions.

Morocco's Role in AFRICOM’s Strategic Framework

During his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate in August 2025, General Anderson underscored Morocco's critical role within AFRICOM's new strategic framework, highlighting the nation's strategic geographical position and capacity for military collaboration. Earlier in July, both Generals Berrid and Anderson convened in Luanda, Angola, during a conference attended by military leaders from 35 African nations, focusing on the vital theme of leveraging strengths to enhance regional security and foster sustainable prosperity.

This collaboration not only signifies a strengthening of military ties between Morocco and the United States but also reflects a broader commitment to enhancing security and stability across the African continent. The establishment of AMTEC is expected to serve as a catalyst for advancing military training and technological innovation, thereby reinforcing the capabilities of both nations in addressing contemporary security challenges.
