Exploring Trade Opportunities between Morocco and India

Despite a steady increase in trade relations over recent years, Morocco and India still possess significant potential for enhancing their economic interactions. Both nations are keen on diversifying their trade and strengthening business ties across various industrial and technological sectors. According to Omar Hejira, the Secretary of State for the Moroccan Minister of Industry and Commerce, the bilateral trade potential between Morocco and India is estimated at an impressive $2.6 billion, which remains largely untapped. This figure was revealed during the 7th session of the Morocco-India Joint Commission held on August 24, 2026.

Data presented by Hejira indicates that around $1.4 billion of this potential aligns with opportunities for Moroccan exports to the Indian market, while Indian exports to Morocco are estimated at approximately $1.2 billion. Priority sectors for trade enhancement include automotive, aerospace, textiles, pharmaceuticals, recycling, and construction materials, alongside emerging fields such as digitization, artificial intelligence (AI), and the digital economy.

This upward trajectory in trade is noteworthy, with government statistics revealing an average annual growth rate of 12.4% between 2021 and 2025, resulting in an increase from approximately $2.9 billion to over $4 billion by 2025. This growth has propelled India to become Morocco's fourth-largest trading partner and its tenth-largest supplier.

Aiming for Doubling Trade Volumes

Both Rabat and New Delhi are ambitious in their goal to double the value of their trade exchanges. The Indian government has expressed that "diversifying the trade basket and expanding market access for both goods and services would significantly unlock the vast, untapped potential of bilateral economic relations." In this context, the authorities of both countries are committed to intensifying efforts to double their bilateral trade within the next five years. To achieve this objective, Morocco and India are focusing on enhancing economic exchanges through increased business delegations, organizing exploratory missions, and strengthening connections between businesses. These initiatives aim to create new opportunities, facilitate market access, and encourage sustainable partnerships and joint ventures between Moroccan and Indian companies.

In a further move to solidify their cooperation, Morocco and India signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) following the 7th session of the Joint Commission. One agreement focuses on cultural exchanges for the period 2026-2030, while the other pertains to food safety. Additionally, a protocol establishing a joint roadmap was signed. For Morocco, the challenge lies in bolstering its presence in the Indian market by leveraging its industrial capabilities. The country is currently leading the newly established industrialization index for Africa, as reported in a study published by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in May 2026. For India, this represents an opportunity to deepen its penetration into the North African market.
