Strengthening Economic Ties Between Morocco and Korea
Morocco and South Korea are making significant strides toward enhancing their economic collaboration, following a recent videoconference meeting between Omar Hejira, Morocco's Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, and Kim Jung-Kwan, South Korea's Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy. During this pivotal discussion, both officials reached a consensus to form a dedicated working group aimed at deepening exploratory dialogues as a precursor to initiating negotiations for a new Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two nations.
In his remarks, Kim Jung-Kwan emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the signing of a joint declaration to establish the working group represents a crucial advancement in the bilateral relations between Morocco and Korea. He articulated optimism regarding a potential future agreement that could significantly enhance trade and investment flows, thereby fostering a comprehensive economic alliance between the two countries. The anticipated agreement, according to Kim, is expected to lay an institutional framework that will promote accelerated and diversified cross-border investments in key sectors such as electric vehicles, batteries, shipbuilding, and defense.
Opportunities for Enhanced Cooperation
Both ministers acknowledged the vast potential for collaboration, highlighting opportunities in mobility and advanced battery supply chains, along with prospects for partnerships in shipbuilding, renewable energy, aerospace, and defense technologies. Hejira reiterated Morocco's commitment to initiating discussions on the proposed agreement, emphasizing the importance of strategic considerations that protect the interests of both nations. He stated, “We regard this initiative as a strategic step that could usher in a new chapter in our economic relations, creating a modern, balanced, and mutually beneficial framework for our economic operators.”
Moreover, Hejira expressed Morocco's readiness to engage in negotiations with a constructive and pragmatic mindset, ensuring that its economic and industrial development priorities are adequately addressed. He underscored the necessity for the agreement to facilitate not only trade but also productive investments, technology transfer, innovation, industrial collaboration, and the overall enhancement of both economies.
The discussions also highlighted the robust potential for cooperation across various high-value industrial sectors, innovative technologies, renewable energy, electric mobility, and energy transition-related value chains. This initiative embodies the shared aspiration of Rabat and Seoul to invigorate their economic partnership through a modern framework of cooperation that emphasizes productive investment, technology transfer, industrial integration, and a stronger bilateral trade relationship.
