Morocco and Niger Strengthen Bilateral Relations with Fifth Cooperation Meeting

On April 8, 2026, under the esteemed directives of King Mohammed VI, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, presided over the fifth session of the joint cooperation committee between Morocco and Niger, held in Niamey. This significant gathering, co-chaired by Niger's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangare, served as a platform to reinforce the historical ties between the two nations and to express a mutual commitment to elevate their relationship to a multi-dimensional partnership, in line with the guidance of King Mohammed VI.

During the opening speech of this session, Bourita highlighted the importance of this meeting as a crucial opportunity to reaffirm the longstanding relationship that binds Morocco and Niger. He emphasized the shared desire to enhance this relationship into a strategic partnership that reflects their common aspirations. Furthermore, Bourita reiterated Morocco's unwavering commitment to South-South cooperation, which he described as a fundamental strategic choice in the Kingdom's foreign policy.

Bourita pointed out the major royal initiatives aimed at achieving continental integration, including the Atlantic African States Initiative and the royal initiative to facilitate access for Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean. These initiatives converge on a single goal: to create favorable conditions for a new phase of joint development and to enhance security and stability across the continent.

Moreover, Bourita expressed Morocco's full solidarity with Niger in its fight against terrorism and violent extremism, strongly condemning the recent terrorist attacks targeting sensitive facilities in the country. He praised the resilience of Niger's armed forces and highlighted the importance of the religious dimension in preventing extremism, particularly through the training of imams and guides at the Mohammed VI Institute, which contributes significantly to enhancing intellectual and spiritual security in Niger.

The fifth session of the joint committee is poised to mark a "qualitative shift" in bilateral cooperation, with the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding covering vital and diverse sectors. These agreements aim to diversify and enrich the partnership, particularly in renewable energy, the pharmaceutical industry, health, transportation, infrastructure, youth, and sports.

Additionally, Bourita acknowledged the positive role played by the Moroccan private sector in Niger through its investments in banking, telecommunications, and air transport. He expressed confidence in the promising potential for developing and expanding these investments to benefit both nations. He also commended the level of cooperation in academic, cultural, and religious spheres, specifically through annual scholarship programs offered to Nigerien students.

Finally, Bourita reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to making this session a "new starting point toward a more advanced stage" in bilateral relations, aligning with the aspirations of King Mohammed VI and his counterpart, Niger's President Abdourahamane Tiani. This relationship exemplifies an ideal model of African cooperation based on effective solidarity and fruitful partnership for both sides.
