Morocco and Norway Forge New Partnership in Carbon Market Mechanisms

Strengthening Bilateral Ties through Carbon Market Mechanisms

In a significant move towards enhancing their environmental collaboration, Morocco and Norway have officially expanded their partnership in the realm of Carbon Market Mechanisms. This announcement was made by the Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development on May 5, 2026, highlighting the two nations' commitment to sustainable development and climate action. The agreement, formalized between Morocco’s energy minister and Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, is centered on the application of Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, which focuses on collaborative approaches for market mechanisms. The essence of this agreement lies in its aim to facilitate the implementation of joint projects that generate internationally transferable mitigation outcomes (ITMOs). Such initiatives are crucial for both countries as they strive to meet their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and combat climate change effectively.

Ambitious Renewable Energy Goals

As part of this strategic framework, Morocco and Norway are set to launch the Generation-Based Incentive (GBI) programme, a forward-thinking initiative designed to foster the deployment of approximately 2 GW of installed renewable energy capacity within Morocco. This program will also encompass the integration of battery storage systems, ensuring a more robust and resilient energy infrastructure over the next decade, from 2026 to 2036. The anticipated impact of this initiative is significant, with projections indicating that it could prevent up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by the year 2030, thereby marking a substantial step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices. Such collaborative efforts not only bolster the renewable energy sector but also exemplify how international cooperation can drive meaningful climate action.
