In a significant development for international relations, Morocco and Switzerland have formalized an agreement focused on immigration, specifically addressing the return of individuals in irregular situations. This agreement, which outlines expedited identification and return procedures, was announced by the Swiss Federal Government on its official website. On May 22, 2026, Vincenzo Mascioli, Switzerland's Secretary of State for Migration, and Khalid Zerouali, Director of Migration and Border Control at the Moroccan Ministry of Interior, convened in Rabat to finalize the details of this partnership. According to the official statement, this agreement reflects the positive dynamics characterizing the relationship between the two nations, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing cooperation in migration, security, training, and economic collaboration.
The signing of this agreement took place during the third meeting of the Joint Permanent Group on Migration. Officials noted that both countries also agreed to bolster economic cooperation and improve social and professional prospects locally. Since 2025, Morocco has been prioritized within the framework of Swiss economic cooperation for development, with plans to enhance security cooperation through targeted training initiatives and experience sharing. The official statement highlighted Morocco's strategic role in managing migration challenges in North Africa, considering it a key partner for Switzerland. The two nations have enjoyed excellent cooperation in migration matters for several years and are also coordinating their commitments at a regional level through the 'Rabat Process', which Switzerland is currently chairing this year.
