Morocco and the United States Forge a Decade-Long Military Partnership at the Pentagon

Strengthening Defense Ties Between Morocco and the United States

In a significant development for international military cooperation, Morocco and the United States have formalized a new framework aimed at enhancing their bilateral defense relationship. The U.S.-Morocco Defense Cooperation Roadmap was signed during a pivotal meeting at the Pentagon, attended by Under Secretary of War Elbridge Colby, along with a Moroccan delegation led by Minister Delegate for National Defense Administration Abdellatif Loudiyi and General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces. This roadmap not only outlines the strategic partnership between the two nations for the next decade but also reflects over 250 years of historical ties, dating back to Morocco's recognition of the United States as its first foreign ally.

This newly established framework serves to deepen the operational collaboration that has already been evolving. For Morocco, the benefits are substantial, including access to cutting-edge American military technology, training opportunities at U.S. military academies, and invaluable intelligence and counterterrorism knowledge transfer. On the other hand, the United States views Morocco as a strategically vital partner, providing a reliable foothold at the gateway to Africa, especially in a region characterized by increasing geopolitical competition.

Upcoming Military Exercises and Technological Advancements

The signing of the roadmap comes just weeks ahead of the African Lion 2026, an annual joint military exercise set to take place from April 20 to May 8 across five strategic locations in Morocco, including Agadir, Tan-Tan, Taroudant, Kénitra, and Benguerir. This year’s iteration holds special significance as it coincides with the 250th anniversary of U.S.-Moroccan relations. Notably, more than 40 American technology companies will participate in the exercise, validating advanced combat tools and utilizing Moroccan terrain as a testing ground for next-generation tactical artificial intelligence systems, advanced command structures, and deep-strike capabilities.

A crucial milestone was reached recently, with the successful testing of the Link-16 tactical communication system in Agadir on February 3. This secure, real-time data-sharing technology, previously exclusive to NATO members, now grants Morocco enhanced interoperability with U.S. forces, indicating the depth of military integration and cooperation between the two nations.

Overall, the roadmap signing paired with the upcoming African Lion exercise positions Morocco's military strategy in 2026 as one of intentional and accelerating alignment with U.S. defense policies. While Morocco continues to diversify its defense partnerships—acquiring advanced Apache AH-64E helicopters and developing next-generation satellite capabilities—it is evident that the Pentagon remains a cornerstone of Morocco's expanding security architecture.
