Morocco and the United States Join Forces for African Lion 2027

As the military collaboration between Morocco and the United States continues to strengthen, preparations are underway for the upcoming African Lion 2027 exercises. These anticipated maneuvers will not only involve troop training but also incorporate participation from defense industries that will test their cutting-edge equipment alongside military units. Initial discussions about the logistics, objectives, and sites for these exercises took place in Agadir, setting the stage for a comprehensive and innovative military exercise.

During a five-day working session at the Southern Zone headquarters, both the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and American partners focused on various aspects of the upcoming edition of African Lion. According to a report published by the US Army, significant opportunities are being created for defense companies to engage actively in the field command exercise, which is considered the centerpiece of the military maneuvers.

The integration of defense manufacturers into the training scenarios is vital, as it allows for the practical testing of new equipment in realistic situations. This initiative builds upon the groundwork laid during African Lion 2026, where over thirty American companies participated in various activities within Morocco, showcasing their technological advancements in military operations.

Future Innovations and Training Centers in Tan-Tan

One notable aspect of the upcoming exercises includes the testing of autonomous tactical vehicles and artificial intelligence systems, which were previously utilized by American soldiers at Drâa Cape near Tan-Tan. These exercises are aimed at enhancing the response time between the detection of threats and military action, a necessity highlighted in past reports. Moreover, the training will also focus on drone operations, reconnaissance, and target identification, further strengthening operational capabilities.

The exercises are part of a larger, sustainable project to establish an advanced training and experimentation center in Tan-Tan, known as AMTEC. Morocco and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding in July for its establishment, with plans for its completion by 2030. The center is designed to include a training zone, a drone academy, and an innovation hub, establishing partnerships with industrial firms and universities to develop and assess autonomous systems, advanced communications, and sensors. African Lion 2027 is anticipated to serve as the first demonstration of this new concept.

As the planners finalize the details for this year's edition, they are also exploring training scenarios that address weapons of mass destruction in Agadir and special operations at Drâa Cape, with these activities still under consideration. The schedule has already been set, with a primary preparation meeting planned for December, followed by a concluding session in February. The official launch of African Lion 2027 is slated for April 19, with participation from over 45 nations expected.
