Morocco and Zambia Strengthen Partnership Across Six Key Sectors

Strengthening Diplomatic Ties Between Morocco and Zambia

In a significant move to bolster diplomatic relations, Morocco and Zambia have reached a new milestone in their cooperation efforts, aiming to enhance collaboration across six strategic sectors. This development comes amidst a broader trend of increasing ties between Morocco and various African nations, signaling a commitment to a more structured and ambitious bilateral partnership. The recent discussions held in Rabat on May 7, 2026, between the foreign ministers of both countries reaffirmed their shared desire to elevate bilateral cooperation to new heights. This initiative is anchored in a mutual strategic vision aimed at transforming the Morocco-Zambia partnership into a vital driver for development and integration within the continent.

During the talks, Zambia's Foreign Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, expressed satisfaction with the current state of relations between the two nations and reiterated their commitment to further enhancing these ties. He noted the importance of aligning their efforts with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco and His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia. A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to convene the second session of the Joint Cooperation Commission in Lusaka, which is expected to facilitate further dialogue and collaboration.

Focus Areas for Enhanced Cooperation

The economic interactions between Morocco and Zambia are currently characterized by an imbalance, with Moroccan exports to Zambia exceeding $26 million in 2024, while imports from Zambia were only around $550,000, according to Trading Economics. The priority now is to translate this cooperation into tangible and balanced projects. The six targeted sectors for this renewed partnership include energy and mining, sustainable development, education and scholarships, research and innovation, health, and social protection. Each of these areas presents an opportunity for both nations to collaborate and achieve meaningful outcomes that benefit their respective populations.

Additionally, Zambia is currently presiding over the Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines for the year 2026. In this capacity, the Zambian government has undertaken global awareness initiatives, including a visit to Morocco to promote humanitarian disarmament and enhance international standards against landmines. Minister Haimbe acknowledged Morocco's significant contributions in this field, highlighting the visible results of its commitment to humanitarian efforts.

Politically, Zambia has reaffirmed its support for Morocco's territorial integrity and its autonomy plan for the Sahara. This stance is bolstered by the recent adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which is viewed as a crucial step forward in addressing this long-standing issue. Zambia's supportive position strengthens Morocco's diplomatic efforts on the continent and enhances its backing in Africa while advocating for a sustainable political solution under the auspices of the United Nations.
