Morocco Sets Date for Shawwal Moon Sighting

The Moroccan Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs has officially announced that the sighting of the crescent moon for the month of Shawwal, corresponding to the year 1447 AH, will take place on the evening of Thursday, 29 Ramadan, which falls on March 19, 2026. In a statement directed to judges and representatives of Islamic affairs across various regions of the kingdom, the ministry urged them to observe the moon on the specified date and to report back with the results of their observations, regardless of whether the sighting is confirmed or not.

This annual procedure is part of the established protocol for determining the beginning of the month of Shawwal, which marks the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. The date relies on the legitimate sighting of the crescent moon, a practice that holds significant importance in Islamic tradition. As the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close, Muslims eagerly anticipate the joyful celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which symbolizes gratitude, community, and the conclusion of fasting.
