Morocco Announces Squad Changes Ahead of World Cup 2026

In a significant update to their roster for the upcoming World Cup, Moroccan internationals Abdessamad Ezzalzouli (commonly known as Ez Abde) and Nayef Aguerd have been replaced by Amine Sbai and Marwane Saadane. This change was officially recorded in the FIFA registration list ahead of the tournament, which is set to kick off this Thursday.

The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has yet to issue an official statement regarding these alterations or confirm whether the absences of Ez Abde and Aguerd are permanent. The decision to exclude Ez Abde stems from a knee injury he sustained during a friendly match against Norway, where medical examinations revealed a ligament sprain that will require several weeks of recovery time, as reported by local Moroccan media.

As for Nayef Aguerd, the publication Le360 noted that after an extended absence due to physical issues, the defender has not managed to regain the necessary level of fitness to participate in the World Cup. Morocco enters this World Cup, hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as one of the rising teams in international football, following a historic performance in Qatar 2022, where they became the first African team to reach the semifinals of a World Cup.

The 'Atlas Lions' will make their tournament debut against Brazil on Saturday, June 13, at the New York/New Jersey Stadium located in East Rutherford, within the New York metropolitan area. Group C also includes Haiti and Scotland, promising an exciting competition ahead.
