Morocco Enhances Its Military Capabilities with Apache Helicopters
In a significant military upgrade, Morocco's Royal Armed Forces have successfully expanded their fleet of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to a total of 18 aircraft. This enhancement follows the recent delivery of six new helicopters from Boeing's facility in Mesa, Arizona, which were transported to the nation via US Air Force C-17 Globemaster III airlifters. This latest delivery is part of a broader procurement strategy that includes a baseline order of 24 helicopters, with an option for an additional 12 units, under a Foreign Military Sales contract that could see Morocco’s total investment reach $4.25 billion. The procurement is justified by the US government on geostrategic grounds, emphasizing Morocco's status as a 'major non-NATO ally' and highlighting its role in maintaining stability across North Africa.
The addition of these advanced helicopters is seen as a crucial step in bolstering Morocco's military capabilities, particularly in terms of precision targeting and tactical interoperability with Western military forces. Furthermore, to support the operational needs of the new helicopters, Morocco has undertaken significant upgrades to Khouribga Air Base, located approximately 130 kilometers southeast of Casablanca. These improvements include over 160,000 square meters of climate-controlled hangars, hardened dispersal bays, underground ordnance storage, and a training wing equipped with two full mission simulators, all designed to protect the helicopters from the region's harsh environmental conditions.
Advanced Features and Strategic Importance
The Moroccan AH-64E Apache helicopters are uniquely camouflaged with a multi-tone desert pattern, reflecting lessons learned from historical operations conducted in Western Sahara during the 1970s and 1980s. Each helicopter is outfitted with advanced technology, including AN/APG-78 Longbow fire-control radar, Hellfire and APKWS guided munitions, as well as Stinger air-to-air missiles. These helicopters are also capable of integrating with Morocco's existing F-16 Block 52+ fighter jets and uncrewed aerial systems through NATO-standard datalinks, enhancing their operational synergy. The acquisition of the AH-64E helicopters marks a significant upgrade from Morocco’s previous fleet of aging French-made Gazelle light helicopters, which lacked the necessary armor and modern targeting systems to effectively perform in contemporary combat scenarios. With this new fleet, Morocco joins Egypt as one of only two nations in Africa equipped with the state-of-the-art AH-64E Apache platform, symbolizing a major leap in its military modernization efforts.
