Morocco Expands Vocational Training Reach in Mali
In a significant diplomatic move, Morocco has established a vocational training complex in Mali, aimed at enhancing the skills of nearly 1,000 individuals annually across various fields. Officially inaugurated on July 24, 2026, the Mohammed VI Vocational Training Complex in Bamako is designed to cater to 21 vocational programs, spanning areas such as construction, civil engineering, hospitality, tourism, and food services. This initiative is a part of Morocco's broader strategy to extend its influence in Africa through educational and vocational training reforms.
The facility, developed by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Sustainable Development, covers an impressive 5,200 square meters and was formally handed over to Malian authorities in a ceremony attended by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Mali's Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, Oumou Sall Seck. This handover is seen as a significant step in South-South cooperation, emphasizing solidarity and the sharing of expertise between the two nations. Bourita highlighted that the initiative not only meets the immediate skills demands of Mali but also strengthens bilateral relations.
The establishment of the vocational training complex aligns with the recent revival of the Morocco-Mali Joint Cooperation Commission, which had been inactive for 26 years. During the recent session held in Bamako, both nations signed 21 bilateral agreements, marking a new era of economic collaboration. Additionally, this partnership also addresses critical employment challenges in Mali, where the unemployment rate among youth remains alarmingly high, with 31% of individuals aged 15 to 24 lacking access to employment, education, or training.
Morocco's commitment to vocational training is not new; since 2002, its Office of Vocational Training and Employment Promotion (OFPPT) has forged over 94 agreements with 35 African nations, aiming to enhance vocational education across the continent. With approximately 8,472 African trainees benefiting from its programs, Morocco continues to reserve 1,000 training slots annually for African nationals. This extensive network of vocational training initiatives underscores Morocco's role as a pivotal player in fostering educational advancement in Africa.
