Morocco's Strategic Move to Enhance Exports to China
In a recent interview aired on CGTN, Abdelkader El Ansari, Morocco's ambassador to Beijing, outlined the kingdom's strategic initiative to leverage China's new zero-tariff policy aimed at fostering trade with 53 African nations. Set to take effect on May 1, 2026, this policy is seen as a significant opportunity for Morocco to amplify its exports to the Chinese market.
El Ansari emphasized that the Moroccan government views this tariff elimination as a "compelling offer" to enhance its sales in China, stating, "We hope that through this generous offer, we can increase the volume of Moroccan exports to China." He further mentioned that technical discussions are currently underway between Moroccan and Chinese authorities to facilitate the implementation of this measure.
Morocco's trade with China exceeded $10 billion in 2025, and the ambassador sees this development as a critical lever for diversifying exports, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, seafood, and craftsmanship. These sectors are expected to benefit significantly from the anticipated growth in trade resulting from the new tariff regime.
Investment Opportunities and Cultural Exchange
Moreover, El Ansari highlighted Morocco's role as an investment hub for Chinese firms looking to expand in Africa, referencing key sectors such as electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy, and the automotive industry. He noted that Chinese investments in Morocco have already surpassed $10 billion, signaling a strengthened cooperation between Beijing and Rabat, particularly through China's Belt and Road Initiative.
