Morocco Completes Major Health Infrastructure Overhaul Benefiting Millions

Morocco has achieved a significant milestone in public health by successfully rehabilitating and re-equipping 1,400 primary care facilities throughout all twelve regions of the Kingdom. This ambitious program, which involved an investment exceeding 6.43 billion dirhams, has directly impacted the lives of over 20 million Moroccan citizens, both in urban and rural areas. This accomplishment is a crucial step towards the government’s broader goal of reforming the national health system to guarantee equitable access to quality healthcare services for all citizens.

The official completion of the program was marked on April 4 with the inauguration of the Aït Ourir Proximity Hospital and the Tazart second-level rural health centre located in Al Haouz province. These two facilities signal the conclusion of a nationwide initiative aimed at modernizing healthcare infrastructure, upgrading essential medical equipment, and advancing the digital transformation of the primary care network through the implementation of an integrated health information system.

The allocation of resources throughout the program demonstrates a deliberate commitment to equity in healthcare access. The Fès-Meknès region received the most extensive investment, rehabilitating 229 facilities at a cost of over 1.024 billion dirhams. Following this, the Souss-Massa region saw 183 facilities rehabilitated for 811 million dirhams, while Marrakech-Safi had 139 sites upgraded at a cost of 664 million dirhams. Notably, the southern regions of Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra, Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, and Guelmim-Oued Noun were also prioritized, underscoring the Kingdom’s dedication to providing healthcare resources throughout its entire territory.

Officials have confirmed that this health initiative is in line with Framework Law 06-22, which governs the national health system, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 concerning universal health coverage by 2030. Future phases of this program are expected to extend rehabilitation efforts to the remaining facilities in the national healthcare network, emphasize preventive maintenance of upgraded sites, implement electronic patient records, and continue the training of healthcare professionals. These steps will help to solidify the structural advancements made during this initial major investment cycle.
