Morocco's Strong Condemnation of Recent Attacks
Morocco has unequivocally condemned the reprehensible drone attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates, with one of the drones specifically aimed at a power generator situated outside the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant's inner perimeter in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi. This condemnation was articulated by Morocco’s Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, during an extraordinary session of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors. This session was convened following the attacks at the request of Arab member states, including Morocco, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, as they highlighted the serious threat posed to nuclear safety in the UAE.
During the session, which saw the attendance of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Farhane reaffirmed Morocco's unwavering solidarity with the United Arab Emirates. Farhane also expressed appreciation for the prompt and transparent communication from UAE authorities to the IAEA concerning the repercussions of the drone strikes. He lauded the effective measures taken to mitigate the impact of these attacks, noting that radiation levels around the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant remain within normal limits. Furthermore, he acknowledged the continuous efforts of UAE authorities to ensure the safe and peaceful operation of the power plant, which is under IAEA safeguards and adheres to the highest international standards.
Morocco reiterated its position regarding the stringent design, construction, and operation of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which is overseen by the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, ensuring compliance with IAEA safety standards. The international community has reacted strongly, with the UN Security Council condemning the drone attack as a serious violation of international law, expressing concern over the potential risks to civilian life and infrastructure. UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced his alarm over the attacks on nuclear installations, labeling them as entirely unacceptable and a breach of international law. Rafael Mariano Grossi, the IAEA Chief, remarked on how a nuclear disaster was narrowly averted, underscoring the potential catastrophic impacts of such hostile actions.
