Morocco Condemns Iranian Aggression Against Arab Nations at UN Human Rights Council

Strong Condemnation of Iranian Attacks

During the ongoing 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, Morocco reiterated its strongest condemnation of the egregious attacks orchestrated by Iran against several Arab nations, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. This statement was made by Morocco's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Omar Zniber, who emphasized that such blatant aggression constitutes a severe breach of the national sovereignty of these neighboring Arab countries and poses an unacceptable threat to the regional security and stability of the area.

Regional Stability Under Threat

Ambassador Zniber highlighted King Mohammed VI's unwavering support, noting that the King had personally reached out to the leaders of the affected nations to express Morocco's solidarity. He pointed out that these aggressive actions contradict the genuine efforts made by the Gulf countries to engage with Iran in promoting regional stability. Furthermore, the ambassador characterized this aggression as part of a persistent pattern of destabilizing activities, which includes Iran's direct support for extremist and separatist groups throughout the region and its direct threats to the territorial integrity of these Arab states.

Morocco firmly denounced the targeting of civilian areas and infrastructure through Iran's missile and drone strikes. The country also expressed its strong opposition to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the critical Strait of Hormuz, actively endorsing the measures put forth by the International Maritime Organization aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the region. In this context, the diplomat welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 and pledged Morocco's full support for a draft resolution presented before the Human Rights Council addressing these issues.

This draft resolution, co-sponsored by Morocco, unequivocally condemns the unprovoked assaults by Iran on several Gulf states and Jordan, expressing profound concern over the strikes that target civilians and essential infrastructure, including energy, transport, water, and food, which severely impact human rights, particularly for vulnerable populations. Additionally, it underscores the far-reaching regional and global ramifications of the military escalation, particularly regarding disruptions to maritime trade in the Strait of Hormuz, which threaten supply chains, food security, and the living conditions of people worldwide. The resolution reaffirms the sovereignty of the affected states, recognizes their right to self-defense, and condemns any infringement on freedom of navigation and attacks on energy infrastructure.
