Morocco's Continued Success in Schengen Visa Acquisition
In 2025, Moroccan nationals have maintained their status as one of the top recipients of Schengen visas globally, highlighting the robust mobility connections between Morocco and European nations. According to recent data published by the European Commission, Moroccan applicants were granted a remarkable total of 480,354 short-stay visas last year. This significant number positions Morocco among the elite countries benefiting from European visa programs.
The data reveals that Moroccan citizens submitted an impressive 619,827 visa applications, securing the Kingdom's position as the fifth-largest applicant country in the world, trailing only behind China, Turkey, India, and Russia. Notably, over 265,000 of the visas issued to Moroccans were multiple-entry permits. This allows the holders to travel frequently within the Schengen area, showcasing a trend of sustained mobility flows and an increasing level of trust between the consulates and Moroccan applicants.
Visa Application Trends and Citizenship Acquisitions
However, the statistics also indicate that 114,320 applications were rejected, resulting in a refusal rate of 19.2%, which is slightly higher than the overall average across the Schengen zone. In total, consulates across the Schengen area processed 11.93 million visa applications in 2025, marking a 1.8% increase from the previous year. While more than 10 million visas were issued, signifying a 3% increase year-on-year, the numbers remain below the pre-pandemic levels observed in 2019, which were close to 15 million.
Further emphasizing Morocco's critical role in Europe’s immigration landscape, Eurostat data from 2024 indicates that 97,056 Moroccan nationals successfully acquired citizenship of a European Union member state. This achievement makes Morocco the second-largest source of new EU citizens, accounting for 8% of all naturalizations. Moroccans are now ranked just behind Syrians and ahead of Albanians, consistently appearing among the leading nationalities acquiring EU citizenship in recent years. This trend underscores the importance of Morocco in the broader context of European integration and mobility.
