Morocco's Rise in Avocado Exports
According to the South African publication "Sunday World," Morocco has become one of the primary beneficiaries of recent shifts in avocado trade across the continent. The country has successfully surpassed its competitors to secure the top position in African avocado exports, which are projected to increase by an impressive 90% by 2025, reaching a total of 141,000 tons. This marks a significant milestone, as Morocco aims to lead the continent for the first time.
The total avocado exports from Africa are expected to reach 430,000 tons by 2025, reflecting a growth rate of 16.7%. This increase can be attributed to the soaring demand from Europe, the Middle East, and certain Asian countries. Morocco's market position has been strengthened by improvements in infrastructure and the stability of its transportation networks.
Moreover, disruptions near the Suez Canal have prompted shipping routes to shift towards the Cape of Good Hope, resulting in longer transportation times and increased costs. This situation has particularly affected several East African countries, with Kenya suffering significantly due to the extended shipping duration, which adversely impacts the quality and shelf life of its fruits, thereby diminishing its competitive edge.
Geographic Advantages and Production Growth
In contrast, Morocco's geographical positioning offers substantial advantages. Shipments from ports like Tangier-Med to Southern Europe take only a few days, compared to the weeks required for deliveries from East African nations. Over the past five years, Morocco has capitalized on this advantage by boosting avocado production through investments in irrigation and the establishment of new farms in regions such as Souss-Massa and Gharb.
Furthermore, Moroccan packaging and export facilities have evolved to meet European standards, simplifying the entry of Moroccan products into global markets. As a result, Morocco has successfully reshaped the dynamics of the avocado market in Africa, outpacing its previously dominant competitors. This achievement is attributed to a combination of increased production and expedited access to markets. Today, logistics have become a crucial factor in competition, and Morocco has effectively leveraged this aspect to its advantage.
