Morocco's Dominance in African Travel from Spain
According to the international travel platform Kiwi.com, Morocco continues to solidify its position as the most sought-after African destination for travelers coming from Spain, capturing a remarkable 71% of all booked flights to the African continent between January and mid-May 2026. Spanish media reports highlight that bookings from Spain to African destinations surged by an impressive 109.4% compared to the same period last year, with the overall number of travelers to Africa increasing by 86.7%. This surge signifies a growing interest among Spaniards in exploring the diverse offerings of the African continent.
Marrakech emerges as the leading city for Spanish tourists, accounting for a substantial 39% of all passengers heading to Africa. Following Marrakech, Tangier and Fes also attracted significant numbers, alongside other major cities like Cairo and Rabat. The data suggests a notable shift in the preferences of Spanish tourists, who are increasingly inclined towards nearby destinations that offer a blend of cultural and natural experiences. Morocco's geographical proximity and its rich array of tourist attractions provide it with a competitive edge in this evolving travel landscape.
Growth in African Travel and Flight Affordability
In terms of other African destinations, South Africa recorded the most significant growth in traveler numbers, soaring by an astonishing 698.6% compared to 2025. Additionally, Tanzania, Kenya, and Cape Verde have also experienced noteworthy increases driven by rising demand for adventure tourism and luxury destinations. The decline in airfares has further supported this recovery, with average ticket prices dropping by 3.8%, while the intermediate costs decreased by 15.5% year-on-year.
Airports in Spain, particularly Madrid and Barcelona, maintained their status as the leading hubs for flights to Africa. However, Seville Airport reported the highest growth rate, with passenger numbers to the continent increasing by 195% compared to the previous year. This trend not only demonstrates Morocco's appeal but also illustrates the broader resurgence of interest in African travel among Spanish nationals, reflecting a vibrant and evolving tourism sector.
