Russian Tourists Flock to Morocco Due to Regional Instability
In light of the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly those involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, there has been a significant shift in travel preferences among Russian tourists. As reported by various Russian travel agencies, Morocco has risen to prominence as a favored alternative destination, overshadowing many traditional travel hotspots. This change is particularly evident in cities like Marrakech, where there has been a remarkable surge in demand, reflected by increased flight bookings and heightened interest from travel operators.
To accommodate this growing influx, airlines have responded by expanding their operations to key Moroccan cities such as Marrakech and Agadir. The increase in flight capacity ranges from 10% to 20%, and new indirect routes have also been introduced, leading to increased competition in the market. Such competitive dynamics are expected to drive down ticket prices, making it more affordable for Russian travelers to visit Morocco.
Morocco's Unique Appeal and Rising Popularity
According to a report from the Russian travel platform Tourprom, while Morocco is not the sole beneficiary of this shift—other destinations like the Dominican Republic and Mauritius have also seen a rise in popularity—it is Morocco's unique combination of security, mild climate, and rich cultural offerings that positions it as the leading choice among Russian tourists. The Russian Tour Operators Association has noted a significant uptick in demand for travel to Morocco this year, with some agencies reporting that interest has doubled, despite Morocco receiving less promotional focus compared to more traditional destinations like Turkey and Egypt.
Data indicates that Agadir, in particular, has become a top choice for summer bookings, accounting for over 71% of all reservations, followed closely by Casablanca and Marrakech. Although there has been a slight uptick in trip costs—partly due to higher fees for Russian-speaking tour guides—the overall appeal of Morocco remains strong. Notably, four-star hotels in Agadir represent about 71% of bookings, a slight decrease from the previous year, while five-star accommodations account for approximately 29% of the market.
Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin has indicated that regular flights to Middle Eastern countries will resume once airspace conditions improve, as current restrictions remain in place over Israeli and Iranian airspace until March 27.
