Morocco's Military Embraces Cutting-Edge Cyber Defense Technology
Marrakech – The Moroccan armed forces have recently integrated an advanced American-made cyber defense platform into their operational networks, according to announcements from Lyntris, a United States-based technology firm that specializes in command-and-control systems. This sophisticated platform, known as the Garda Cyber Command Suite, is not only operational in Morocco but has also been deployed in Taiwan and Armenia, collectively overseeing more than 100 monitored sites across these nations.
Lyntris emphasizes that the Garda Cyber system is fully operational and not merely a prototype or in the testing phase. It provides critical capabilities such as real-time threat detection, automated incident response, and on-demand digital forensics, leveraging artificial intelligence to analyze potential threats and identify patterns indicative of cyberattacks. This deployment reflects a significant shift in U.S. military policy; since 2017, the United States has underscored the importance of cybersecurity for coalition interoperability, guided by directives from organizations such as the NSA and US Cyber Command.
Strengthening Coalition Security Through Advanced Technology
As part of this policy, the United States made it clear that partner nations lacking robust cybersecurity measures would be excluded from accessing U.S. systems for sharing classified military information. In response to this directive, the Garda Cyber platform was developed to address these gaps by integrating various security functions, including security information and event management (SIEM), endpoint detection and response (EDR), intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS), threat intelligence, vulnerability scanning, and incident response into a cohesive operating environment. This multifaceted approach is particularly valuable in military contexts where communication may be sporadic or unreliable, allowing for continued operational effectiveness even in adverse conditions.
Daniel Gelyana, the executive vice president for global command and control at Lyntris, linked the urgency of deploying such solutions to the evolving U.S. policy on cybersecurity. He noted that partner nations, including Morocco, Armenia, and Taiwan, required a rapid implementation of effective cybersecurity solutions rather than prolonged custom builds or lengthy timelines. Consequently, Garda Cyber and Quasar were rolled out swiftly across more than 100 monitored sites, enabling local operators to commence defensive cyber missions within days.
While Lyntris has not disclosed the financial specifics of the contract with Morocco, the deployment's timeline is described as spanning from 2017 to the present, indicating that these capabilities have already been woven into Morocco's operational framework. Furthermore, Lyntris has also confirmed that Morocco utilizes Garda C2, a command-and-control platform designed to synthesize data from a variety of sensors into a singular operational picture. This platform encompasses 65 sensor sites, three regional operations centers, one main command center, three mobile command nodes, and six vessels, supporting between 150 to 200 operational users.
Gelyana articulated the significance of this maritime capability, stating that Garda C2 integrates disparate data feeds into a unified operational picture, thereby enhancing decision-making processes and coordination across military forces. Complementing the technological deployment, Lyntris has also focused on training, having completed a two-week certification course for Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) operators in San Diego, covering essential aspects of system administration and operations.
Over the past 15 years, Lyntris has conducted numerous training sessions, certifying hundreds of international operators, with Morocco emerging as one of its most active international partners. Feedback from Moroccan users has been instrumental in refining the platform, leading to improvements such as lighter map layers and integrated logistics data, some of which are now being adapted for use within U.S. Navy command structures. Lyntris positions itself as a defense technology firm that bridges sensing and action across the connected battlespace, serving U.S. and allied forces engaged in over 200 defense programs.
