Morocco's Strategic Military Investments
In a significant move to bolster its military capabilities, Morocco has announced the acquisition of 18 HIMARS rocket systems and 40 M57 ATACMS missiles, which possess a remarkable range of up to 300 kilometers. This development raises concerns regarding military dynamics in the region, especially considering the proximity of these systems to Spain's logistical military base in Córdoba. The distance from Tetuan to Córdoba is approximately 263 kilometers, indicating that Moroccan artillery could potentially reach key military assets of the Spanish Army.
This military enhancement comes in the wake of an increased focus on regional security following the recent irregular migration crisis in Ceuta, which has drawn the attention of Spanish authorities. The Spanish National Court is currently investigating the situation as a possible violation of Spain's territorial integrity. Morocco is set to receive its HIMARS systems, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, in 2027, as part of a broader arms deal approved by the U.S. in 2023, which is expected to be delivered by 2028. Currently, Morocco boasts additional long-range rocket systems, including the Israeli Puls and Chinese PHL-03/AR2 launchers, as well as missiles like the Extra and Predator Hawk, which further enhance its military capabilities. In contrast, Spain does not possess comparable long-range weaponry, which places it in a precarious position. The ATACMS missiles are already operational within the U.S. Army and have been supplied to other nations, including Ukraine and various allies in Europe and Asia, highlighting the growing military partnerships in the region.
Moreover, Morocco is considering acquiring the Israeli LORA ballistic missile, which has an impressive range of up to 430 kilometers. This acquisition could further extend the reach of Moroccan artillery, potentially placing a significant portion of Spain within range. The strengthening of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Israel, alongside U.S. support, underscores a shifting geopolitical landscape that could have profound implications for regional security.
