Morocco Enhances Military Capabilities with New Apache Helicopter Deliveries

Royal Moroccan Air Force Receives Second Batch of Apache Helicopters

On April 7, 2026, the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) marked a significant advancement in its military modernization efforts with the reception of its second batch of six Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters. This delivery, which brings the total number of Apache units acquired to 12, aligns with Morocco's strategic goal to enhance its rotary-wing strike capabilities. The helicopters delivered fall within the serial numbers 2407 to 2412 range, as part of a phased delivery plan of 24 aircraft ordered from Boeing in 2020, with an option for an additional 12 units. This acquisition is vital for bolstering Morocco's operational readiness and improving its aerial combat capabilities.

The newly arrived helicopters are stationed at the 7th Air Base in Khouribga, which has undergone significant upgrades to facilitate the deployment of two Apache squadrons within its Aerocombat Wing. This latest shipment comes on the heels of the initial batch of six helicopters delivered in March 2025, signifying consistent progress in the phased delivery schedule established in the government-to-government agreement from 2020. The ceremony marking this delivery underscores the deepening strategic partnership between the United States and Morocco, highlighted by the presence of prominent officials such as Abdellatif Loudiyi, the Delegate Minister for National Defence, and General Michael Langley of U.S. Africa Command.

Strategic Importance of the Apache Acquisition

The acquisition of the AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters stems from a comprehensive contract signed in June 2020, valued at approximately $1.5 billion. This contract not only includes the 24 helicopters but also an option for an additional 12, facilitating the gradual modernization of Morocco's military forces. The assembly of these aircraft by Boeing began in November 2023 in Mesa, Arizona, and the program represents an essential component of Morocco's broader military modernization initiative aimed at phasing out outdated platforms such as the SA342 Gazelle. While the Gazelle has served Morocco effectively in light reconnaissance and anti-tank roles for many years, it cannot compete with the advanced technology, heavy protection, and all-weather operational capabilities of the Apache.

The AH-64E Apache Guardian is designed as a sophisticated networked “digital warrior” optimized for high-intensity combat scenarios. Each helicopter is powered by dual General Electric T700-GE-701D turboshaft engines, providing 2,000 shaft horsepower and enabling speeds of approximately 300 kilometers per hour. Furthermore, the Apache's airframe is engineered to withstand impacts from 23mm-class ammunition, significantly enhancing its survivability in hostile environments. The combination of advanced armament and cutting-edge technology makes this acquisition particularly significant for Morocco's military strategy, offering a versatile range of tactical options across various operational contexts.

The Apache's armament package enhances Morocco's military capabilities, featuring a robust mix that includes precision-guided missiles like the AGM-114R Hellfire, as well as advanced rocket systems. This diverse arsenal enables the RMAF to engage a wide array of targets effectively, from light fortifications to heavily armored vehicles. Additionally, the integration of the AN/APG-78 Longbow Fire Control Radar offers Morocco a crucial operational advantage, allowing for the simultaneous detection and classification of multiple targets, even under challenging weather conditions. This capability enables rapid engagements with minimal exposure, thereby increasing the effectiveness of Morocco's aerial operations.

Moreover, the AH-64E incorporates Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) technology, allowing Moroccan aircrews to access real-time video feeds from unmanned aerial vehicles. This feature enhances situational awareness and supports more effective decision-making in combat scenarios. The helicopters also utilize Link 16 data-sharing protocols, facilitating seamless coordination with ground forces and other air assets, thereby strengthening Morocco’s overall military capabilities.

The delivery of this second batch of Apache helicopters signifies a pivotal transition for the RMAF from an initial testing phase to a robust, self-sustaining combat aviation capability. With 12 operational helicopters, Morocco is poised to enhance its pilot training, maintenance schedules, and active patrols, establishing a foundation for rapid response to regional security challenges. The continued acquisition of these modern aircraft not only reflects Morocco's commitment to military enhancement but also underscores the strategic partnership with the United States, a relationship that plays a critical role in maintaining stability within the region.
