Morocco Experiences Decline in Electricity Production

Morocco Reports a Decrease in Electrical Energy Production

Recent data from the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasting has revealed that Morocco's national electricity production has experienced a decline of 0.8% by the end of the first quarter of 2026. This follows a more significant drop of 1.7% at the end of February 2026. The report, issued under the Ministry of Economy and Finance, indicates that the primary drivers of this downturn are a 2.8% reduction in private electricity production and a notable 6.2% contraction in output from the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water.

Contrastingly, the production of renewable energy, in accordance with Law No. 13.09, has surged, witnessing an impressive increase of 27.4%. Furthermore, the production from independent producers also saw a remarkable rise of 186.6%. These developments suggest a shift towards more sustainable energy sources, which may be pivotal for Morocco's energy strategy moving forward.

On the other hand, Morocco's electrical energy imports have surged by 63.5% during the first quarter of 2026, compared to a modest 2.1% increase in the previous year. Conversely, exports of electrical energy plummeted by 35.1%, following a previous decline of 20.2%. As for the net energy demand, it rose by 3.5% at the end of March 2026, which is a rise from 4.2% recorded a year prior.

In terms of energy consumption, there has been a positive development, with a 6.6% increase at the end of March 2026, building on a solid growth of 12.5% over the previous year. These trends highlight the ongoing challenges and opportunities within Morocco's energy sector as it navigates a landscape of declining traditional energy production while simultaneously enhancing its renewable capabilities.
