Morocco Extends Import Duties on Wheat and Livestock Products
In a significant update, the Moroccan government has announced the extension of customs measures concerning the importation of wheat and livestock products. This decision was formalized in the recent issue of the official gazette, which included Decree No. 2.26.583, mandating the continuation of the import duty on soft wheat and its derivatives, effective from August 1, 2026, until August 31, 2026. Following this period, the decree stipulates a complete suspension of the import duty starting September 1, 2026, as part of efforts to stabilize market prices during a critical phase for food security.
Furthermore, Decree No. 2.26.584 addresses the customs measures related to meat and live animals. This decree allows for the suspension of import duties on live sheep and the meat of cattle, sheep, goats, and camels until December 31, 2026. However, it is important to note that the internal organs of these animals will still be subject to a 30% import duty. These measures reflect the government's commitment to ensuring a steady supply of essential food products while also supporting local markets during demanding economic conditions.
The implementation of these decrees has been entrusted to the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance responsible for Budget, Fozi Lekjaâ. The decisions were made after extensive discussions in the government council on July 22, 2026, and are underpinned by various legal frameworks, including the provisions set forth in the General Customs and Indirect Tax Code. This proactive approach by the Moroccan government is intended to bolster food security and manage the cost of living for its citizens amid fluctuating global market conditions.
