Morocco Extends Nightlife During the World Cup: Cafes and Restaurants Open Until Dawn

Morocco Embraces Festivities with Extended Operating Hours

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off recently, Moroccan cities have embraced the spirit of the tournament by extending the operating hours of cafes and restaurants to accommodate enthusiastic fans. With only one day remaining until Morocco's pivotal match against Brazil, local councils across various cities have begun to announce their decisions regarding extended hours. For instance, the Marrakech council has officially declared that cafes and restaurants will remain open until 4 AM from June 11 to July 19, allowing patrons to enjoy the matches in a lively atmosphere.

In Agadir, a source from the local council has confirmed that cafes will extend their closing time to 5 AM throughout the World Cup period. Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing in Tangier about a similar extension, though it remains undecided whether this will apply to all World Cup matches or just those featuring the Moroccan national team. The city of Ouarzazate has also joined the trend, allowing cafes and restaurants to operate until the conclusion of World Cup broadcasts.

Balancing Public Interest and Regulations

In Casablanca, however, city council member Karim El Klaybi stated that as of now, there is no official decision mandating any special closures or reduced hours for cafes during the World Cup. He emphasized that any such measures would require legal protocols and consultations with local authorities, with formal announcements made to the public. The council is keenly aware of the balance between the needs of the citizens and the tourism sector while ensuring public order is maintained.

Sources from the Ministry of the Interior have clarified that no regulations have been issued to close cafes and restaurants at night as Morocco competes in the World Cup, highlighting that this issue is not part of any extraordinary measures related to the global sporting event. The ministry reiterated that the regulation of operating hours for cafes and restaurants falls under the jurisdiction of local councils, while local authorities are responsible for ensuring compliance with laws and maintaining public order.

Local authorities have also been advised to address any complaints from residents regarding nighttime disturbances, particularly when certain establishments may disrupt the peace of neighboring communities through loudspeakers or large screens, which could affect public tranquility. As Morocco celebrates its participation in this illustrious event, the extended hours reflect a commitment to creating a vibrant and festive environment for fans.
