Severe Weather Conditions Expected Across Morocco
Morocco is bracing for a series of extreme weather conditions as the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued warnings for high temperatures, dusty winds, and the potential for scattered storms. Over recent weeks, the country has been subjected to a relentless succession of heatwaves, causing temperatures to soar, particularly in the Southeast and the Saharan provinces. The forecast for Sunday indicates that these conditions will persist, with relatively hot weather expected to engulf the inland areas and the Southeast.
Morning and evening hours may bring low clouds accompanied by fog or light drizzle, particularly over the Atlantic plains and the Mediterranean coastline, providing a brief respite from the heat. Meanwhile, the Oriental region and the Middle Atlas, along with its eastern slopes, will likely face partly cloudy skies and a risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms in certain areas. Winds are anticipated to pick up strength across the eastern highlands, the Atlas Mountains, and the Southeast, which could lead to localized dust storms and significantly reduced visibility.
Health Risks and Precautions Amidst Heatwaves
The DGM has projected that minimum temperatures will range from 24 to 28 degrees Celsius in the Southeast, while cooler temperatures between 11 and 17 degrees Celsius are expected in the Atlas and Rif regions. Elsewhere in the country, temperatures are forecast to fluctuate between 16 and 24 degrees Celsius. While a slight decrease in minimum temperatures is expected in the Southeast, a slight rise is anticipated in other regions. The sea conditions are forecasted to be generally calm in the Mediterranean, with slightly rough conditions in the Atlantic.
In recent weeks, Morocco has faced multiple heatwaves that have escalated health concerns among the populace. High temperatures have posed significant risks, particularly for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, increasing the likelihood of dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. Consequently, authorities have urged residents to take adequate precautions, such as avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, seeking shade, and ensuring adequate hydration throughout the day.
