Morocco Faces New Controversy as Another Case Heads to CAS

Moroccan Football Under Scrutiny Amid CAS Appeals

The realm of African football has recently been engulfed in controversy, particularly following a tumultuous March marked by significant decisions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). On March 17, the CAF's appeals jury overturned Senegal's victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, awarding the title to Morocco with a resounding 3-0 victory by default. This unexpected turn of events sparked widespread reactions across the football community and set the stage for potential further disputes.

In the aftermath, the Senegalese Football Federation took action by filing an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against both the CAF and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, contesting the recent verdict. This situation has opened the door for additional developments that may further complicate matters for the African football governing body.

Al-Hilal Omdurman's Doping Allegations Against RS Berkane

Compounding the situation, another case is brewing that may further destabilize the CAF. The recent quarter-final match of the African Champions League between RS Berkane and Al-Hilal Omdurman ended in a 1-1 draw, followed by a narrow 1-0 win for Berkane. However, this match has escalated beyond mere sporting results, as Al-Hilal has officially lodged a complaint against their Moroccan counterparts. The Sudanese club alleges that Hamza El Moussaoui participated in the match despite being suspended due to a doping violation. Reports indicate that the player tested positive for a glucocorticoid, leading to a 30-day suspension imposed by the CAF just two days before the match.

Al-Hilal claims to have made multiple inquiries to the CAF regarding this issue but has not received satisfactory responses. The Sudanese side is now demanding severe penalties against RS Berkane, which could include exclusion from future African competitions and a reevaluation of the match outcome. Frustrated by the perceived indifference from the CAF, Al-Hilal has threatened to escalate the matter to CAS, asserting that they have a robust case supported by over ten pieces of evidence. This situation adds further pressure on the CAF, which is already grappling with the fallout from recent controversies.
