Morocco Foils ISIS-Linked Terror Plans in the Sahel Region

Morocco's Counterterrorism Successes

In a significant counterterrorism operation, Moroccan authorities have successfully thwarted a potential terrorist plot linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Sahel region of Africa. The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) arrested ten individuals, including a minor and a former inmate, suspected of having ties to ISIS. These arrests, announced on Monday, were the result of coordinated actions carried out by units of the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance across several cities, including Casablanca, Agadir, and Tetouan.

According to an official statement from the BCIJ, the investigations revealed that the members of this terrorist cell had pledged allegiance to the self-proclaimed caliph of ISIS and had recently received direct guidance and communications from some leaders of the organization’s branch operating in the Sahel and Sahara regions. This alarming connection highlights the ongoing threats posed by extremist groups in North Africa.

During the operation, law enforcement officials made a troubling discovery at a warehouse in the southern town of Inzegan. They found a modified four-wheel drive vehicle that had been altered to run on propane gas, intended for use in executing a terror attack. The vehicle was reportedly prepared for a potential suicide bombing or ramming attack against sensitive targets and facilities. Additionally, authorities seized knives, military uniforms, and detailed instructions on how to assemble explosive devices during their searches.

The detained adults will remain in custody, while the minor has been placed under protective measures. Morocco has historically been vigilant in its fight against terrorism, especially following the devastating attacks in Casablanca on May 16, 2003, which claimed numerous lives and injuries. Fortunately, the country has remained largely free from armed attacks since then, although security agencies continue to regularly announce the disruption of various terrorist plots.
