Morocco's Fight Against Illegal Migration
On September 11, 2026, it was officially reported that Moroccan authorities successfully thwarted a staggering 73,640 attempts at illegal migration throughout the year 2025. This significant achievement forms part of Morocco's ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration and enhance the monitoring of its borders and coastal areas. The Moroccan news agency has released data indicating that over 300 smuggling networks were dismantled in the same period, showcasing the country's proactive stance against human trafficking.
In addition to these preventive measures, authorities rescued approximately 13,595 migrants at sea, providing them with essential medical assistance and shelter. Furthermore, 4,372 irregular migrants benefited from voluntary return programs, which were coordinated with their respective diplomatic missions, ensuring that their rights and dignity were upheld throughout the process.
The data also highlighted a gradual decline in the number of intercepted migrants, suggesting a decrease in migration flows through Morocco. However, ongoing regional pressures and shifts in migration routes have led to an increase in movement towards other areas in West Africa and across the southern Mediterranean. Notably, the European Union announced in December 2025 that it had reached an agreement with European Parliament representatives to establish the first unified list of safe countries of origin, which includes several nations, Morocco among them.
