Morocco Implements Export Restrictions on Tomatoes Amid Price Surge

In a strategic move to stabilize the soaring domestic prices of tomatoes that recently hit €1.4 per kilogram, Morocco has announced a temporary halt on tomato exports to African nations and imposed partial restrictions on shipments to Europe. This decision, confirmed by the Interprofessional Federation of Fruit and Vegetables (Fifel) on April 15, was enacted by the Independent Agency for Export Control and Coordination, which operates under the Ministry of Agriculture. The federation expressed concerns regarding the potential impact this could have on the credibility of Moroccan exporters in the international market.

The suspension of exports was reportedly reached through a collaborative and amicable agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and various export associations, allowing for a more gradual control over the fluctuating prices of tomatoes. For instance, in the heart of Rabat, the price of tomatoes in stores was observed at 14 dirhams (€1.3) last week but saw a significant decrease to 11 dirhams (€1) as of Wednesday.

However, Fifel has raised alarms about the implications of these export restrictions, particularly noting that Moroccan exporters have existing contractual obligations with partners in both Africa and Europe. Failure to meet these commitments may compel foreign partners to seek alternative suppliers from competing nations, which could have long-term repercussions for Morocco's export market.
