Pricing and Production Details
The primary objective of this initiative is to standardize the license plates used in Morocco with those required for international travel. In Casablanca, the first workshops have already commenced production of the new model. The pricing for these new plates varies based on quality and materials used, with standard white plates starting at approximately 150 dirhams. Certain models may cost around 170 dirhams, while higher-quality versions can reach up to 200 dirhams. Reflective plates are also available, enhancing visibility by reflecting light, especially at night. According to industry professionals, the manufacturing process is relatively quick; it typically takes about 15 minutes to position the characters, integrate the "MA" designation, paint, and finalize the plate.
As for whether all motorists need to change their plates immediately, the reform allows for a gradual transition. Vehicles already registered under the normal series with the old plates lacking Latin characters can continue to use their current plates until the first transfer of ownership occurs. However, vehicles involved in international travel that already feature Latin characters and a separate "MA" designation will have a more specific deadline: their old plates will remain valid until December 31, 2026. Beyond this date, they will need to switch to the new unified model. For new registration operations, the new plate format has already been in effect since the publication of the decision, impacting both new vehicles purchased in Morocco and imported vehicles, whether new or used.
This reform is particularly designed to facilitate international travel. According to the NARSA, one of the main goals is to eliminate the challenges associated with using different plates depending on whether a vehicle is operating domestically or internationally.
